About DefCloud SafeBrowser
There are lots of web reputation services out there, and they all do the same thing. They show a little green, yellow, orange or red dot or star next to a link to let you know status or reputation of a website you might want to visit. But these other web reputation services don't give you the whole story! Web pages often visit third party sites such as ad servers while loading, and occasionally it's these third party sites that are the source of the virus not the main site. SafeBrowser has the ONLY web reputation service that can warn you about these third party sites, because SafeBrowser loads and analyses the whole page not just its address.
Antivirus authors would have you believe that by installing their product you'll be protected from all web borne viruses as well as viruses in files and emails. Nothing could be further from the truth. Web based malware is too well disguised and masked and it changes too often for antivirus authors to keep up. It's estimated that the average antivirus application can detect about 10% of the malware actively floating about on the net today. Antivirus apps have their place and are essential in today's malware ridden environment, but SafeBrowser gives you another essential tool you can use to keep web based viruses and malware away from your computer
There's a problem with most web reputation services. They tell you the status and reputation of a website but at the end of the day, the decision is still left to you. Especially if the site has yellow (care) or orange (caution) status. Do you open it or don't you? With SafeBrowser it's not an issue. You can go ahead and view the page in SafeBrowser. Anything that could cause harm will have been removed* (in SafeBrowser's Default Mode)
Shortened URLs such as bit.ly and goo.gl have their uses, but they're also a malware authors dream. It's estimated that one in five of the pages behind these shortened URLs have viruses or other malware just waiting to download onto your computer. SafeBrowser protects your computer because it does all redirection on the server, loads the final redirected page, strips it of anything that could cause harm*, and sends the safe version to your browser. Once your satisfied that you are on the site you expected to be, you can always then choose to view that page in a normal browser window by clicking the button.
